Correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, maps, essays, printed material, and an artifact, relating to Lilly's business activities, land transactions, and family, and to the allied Sutherland and Craighead families. Family letters primarily contain family news and current events in Texas and Tennessee. Much of the family correspondence is related to the family of John Lilly's wife, Eliza T. (Craighead) Lilly, including her parents, James P.N. Craighead (1812-1874) and Sarah A. Craighead (1833-1870), and her maternal grandfather, John Sutherland, Jr. (1792-1867), and his third wife, Ann Margaret (Dickson) Sutherland (1809-1862).

Physician Dr. John Sutherland, Jr. (1792-1867) was born to John and Agnes Sutherland near Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. In 1816, he married Diana Kennedy in Knox County, Tennessee, and, after her death, moved to Texas in 1829 with his brother George Sutherland.
